Improve Your Brain Function - Support Your Emotional Life

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

How your brain functions has everything to do with your emotional life and how you manage it. In fact, your emotional health and well-being is one of the greatest assets you possess - more precious than your financial bottom line, even.

Unfortunately as an adult, you may have been trained away from - negatively conditioned, even - from including your active, conscious participation in your emotional life as a central, even essential, part of taking care of your health.

You weren't born that way, however. As an infant and child, your emotional life was just part of what you dealt with moment-by-moment-by moment. You tended to 'emotional ouches' as they occurred just like the physical ouches that are part of every child's experience.

Instead, you likely had to unlearn that natural integration and wall off your emotional life so it was at the very least separate from the rest of your self, and sometimes even buried so it was totally disowned.

By the time whole cultures do this to children, it makes for a pretty dysfunctional world!

When this is your condition as an adult you need to turn it around, not only reclaiming your emotional life, but placing it back at the center of your life where it belongs. You need to get reacquainted with a fundamental part of yourself that was long ago left by the wayside where it remains abandoned, neglected, barely surviving. But how is this possible?

Of great benefit in this situation is to have an overview of what a healthy emotional life looks like, what it includes, how it unfolds. This provides a way to understand what to do in each aspect of emotional life. It also grants you the means to discover what phase of your emotional life you are in right now, and therefore what tasks you need to attend to now.

When you have such a guide, you can use it to begin reclaiming those long neglected parts of yourself so you can bring them back to healthy functioning. Also, using such a guide, you will not only improve your own individual emotional health and well-being, you will also have healthy ways to support the emotional life of your children, grandchildren, partners, friends, parents, co-workers etc. In short, you are contributing to a better life for yourself, and for each individual with whom you come in contact - everyone in the world in which you live. This is how a process that seems intensely personal and private actually has major political effects.

With a map of the emotional territory of life, it's straightforward process to re-integrate your emotional life. It once again becomes a normal part of your life, something you attend to every day, automatically, like you attend to needs for hunger, food, rest, companionship, exercise. And you are removing one of the most potent negative influences on your brain function - emotional stress.

Brain Neuron Degeneration and Mercury - How Mercury Damages Your Brain Cells

Mercury has long been known to be a potent neurotoxic substance, whether it is inhaled or concealed in food as a dietary toxin. Over the past fifteen years, medical research laboratories have established that dental amalgam tooth fillings are a major contributor to mercury body burden.

Understanding how this occurs can reduce the likelihood of permanent brain damage and lead to solutions that can repair the damage. How exactly does this take place?

Mercury is a heavy metal (chemical symbol, Hg) that is also called quicksilver because it is a liquid like water and shiny like silver. It conducts electricity. It occurs naturally in cinnabar mines. Mercury is the causative agent behind the phrase 'mad as a hatter' - referring to the symptoms of mercury poisoning exhibited by hatters in the 18th century who used it in the process of forming hats from felt. It was also used to treat syphilis, an approach that produced symptoms worse than the disease it was designed to address.

Mercury is currently being injected into people in flu vaccines (Thimerosol) used to fill dental cavities and absorbed through skin in cosmetics (again, Thimerosol (especially eye shadow), But the mechanism through which it moves from a vaccination or dental cavity or eye shadow to cause death of brain cells has been unknown until recently.

In 1997 a team of research scientists demonstrated that mercury inhalation in animals produced a molecular release of brain protein metabolism which was similar to the lesions of 80% of Alzheimer's disease patients' brains. Simply put, they demonstrated how mercury causes brain neuron degeneration.

Recent experiments at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine revealed how mercury alters developing brain neurons. Brain neurons have a central cell body and numerous neuro-like processes. At the end of each neuron is a growth-like space. That's where proteins are assembled to form the cell membrane.

One of the two principal proteins involved in growth and function is responsible for tubular molecules, a major structural component. Tubular molecules connect end-to-end to form molecules which surround neural fibers, another structural protein component of the neuron axon.

When live brain tissue neurons are cultured and allowed to grow, then exposed to very low concentrations of mercury for as little as twenty minutes, the neuronal membrane rapidly degenerates and leaves behind denuded neural fiber.

To understand how mercury causes this degeneration, picture proteins that during normal cell growth link together to form micro-tubules that support the neural structure.

But when mercury ions infiltrate the neural cell, they bind themselves to the sides of the newly synthesized tubular molecules. This prevents the neural tubular proteins from linking together.

Consequently, these micro-tubules disassemble into free tubular molecules and leave the neurites - the projections on the end of neurons - stripped of their support structure. Ultimately both the developing neurite and its growth cone collapse. Further, some develop neural fibers, aggregates, or tangles.

In other words, mercury exposure to the neurite growth cone results in disintegration of the micro tubular structure.

This study provides the first direct evidence that even low level mercury exposure is a precipitating factor that can initiate this neural degenerative process within the brain, resulting in the tangles of Alzheimer's patients.

It therefore demonstrates that a key to preventing Alzheimer's is to eliminate sources of mercury exposure in the first place, and to remove any cumulative mercury body burden that has built up.

Seizure, Epileptic Drugs Not Working? 4 Places to Start Healing Your Brain

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

From the traditional medical approach to seizures and epilepsy, the foundation of the approach is anti-epileptic drug therapy (AED). This foundation is added to by brain surgery or the use of a vagal nerve stimulator implanted in the chest. That's pretty much the armamentarium. And pretty much disappointing when you look at just how effective these approaches are. But they all leave one important thing out.

None of the standard traditional medical approaches actually do anything to heal the brain. Keep in mind that unhealthy brain cells (I call them "sick neurons") are where the problems with migraines and epilepsy start. Medications to control seizures merely suppress the communication between the sick neuron or groups of neurons and the neighboring cells. This is why very few epileptics are able to get off their meds even years or decades later--because the problem has not been fixed.

In only about 30% of the time does the first drug tried to control seizures actually work. When that first one doesn't work, another is tried. And another, and another. When single drugs do not work, combinations of drugs are used. However, the realm beyond the use of a single drug is mere guesswork and not "medical science." (Remember this when your neurologist says this is no research to support Coenzyme Q10 for seizures...).

Just in case you think that your neurologist is different and somehow has access to research not available elsewhere, consider that current research into whether the addition of two or more drugs is for refractory seizures (seizures that are not well controlled with medications) finds that only a single combination ( lamotrigine and valproate) was more effective than using only one drug. The use of three drugs was not effective.

So what are the alternatives? Clearly, when one drug is not effective, the likelihood of a second drug helping to control the seizures is very small. When faced with this situation, and hopefully long before, the addition of natural approaches to heal the brain are critical. The list is long, but you can begin with some easy steps.

1) The first is to begin to eliminate chemicals from your life. The brain is a very sensitive organ and the massive amount of chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis does nothing to support good brain health.

a) Never buy anything without reading the label. Better yet, buy foods that don't need to come with a
label.
b) Do not buy food items that contain ingredients you cannot pronounce without embarrassing yourself
in a crowd of chemistry students.
c) Switch your shopping away from the big commercial grocery stores to smaller, healthier farmer's
markets.
d) Avoid ALL artificial sweeteners like the plague.
e) Examine sources of chemical exposures in your life and reduce when possible. This includes
-plastic water bottles and food storage containers
-cosmetic and beauty products (to include hair dye)
-household cleaning products, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, fertilizers
-all exposure to cigarette smoke
-old cushions or other compounds that are flame resistant
-mattresses made after July 2007
-airborne particles (use a room air cleaner).

2) Antioxidant supplements like vitamin C, vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols), CoQ10 and alpha lipoic acid

3) Exercise is NOT an option; it is required for a healthy brain.

4) Consider an elmination or ketogenic diet

This list is only the short list of things that can be done to heal and protect your brain. As you can see, there is no shortage of changes that you can make. The limitation to ONLY use medication to treat seizures borders on malpractice. Every recommendation above is well founded on medical research (or should we say "at least" as well founded as medication usage).

Some of these changes are simple, some are much more intrusive into your current lifestyle. But let's face it...it's your brain. Isn't it worth it?
